Impact of Mukutmanipur Dam: A Socio-Economic Study on the People of Gorabari Mouza, Khatra C.D. Block, Bankura, West Bengal

Dams or Reservoirs are generally called as the Temple of modern society. Those Dams play so many important roles; one of them is utilizing water resources. Those Dams are not ordinary Engineering Buildings. Dams are constructed to prevent floods, supply drinking water, domestic use, generate energy and also for irrigation purpose. Mukutmanipur Dam is also an important Reservoir in Bankura District, West Bengal. Gorabari is a village in Khatra C.D. Block of Bankura District near Mukutmanipur Dam. Mukutmanipur Dam selected as the second largest Earthen Dam in India. This Dam, a great water Reservoir was constructed in 1959 under the supervision of the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, to provide the Irrigation facilities of 8000 sq. km of agricultural land. In this point of view it may be also pointed that those Irrigation facilities are not only for Bankura district but also for Purulia, West Medinipur and Hoogly districts. The people of Gorabari Mouza are mostly affected by this reservoir. There are so many positive and negative impacts on the local people’s lifestyle of Gorabari Mouza which have been observed with the help of the Socio-Economic survey
