Ever since the planning stage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in the eighties there has been an incentive to create a free trade agreement with all the American countries. The next natural step for the USA has been the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). This is a very controversial experiment as it is the first free trade agreement of this dignity between countries with such immense economic differences. This thesis will investigate how the CAFTA will affect the different economic sectors of Nicaragua. The studied sectors are the agriculture, the assembly industry and the micro, small, and medium businesses in the informal sector.
