The traditional Tempe cell can be used to adequately determine the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) for soils that do not undergo significant volume change as matric suction is increased, such as coarse-grained material such as sand with a low air entry value (AEV) (<500 kPa). When soils undergo substantial volume change as soil suction increases, such as fine-grained silts, clays, and oil sands tailings material, the soils need to be tested with distinctly different methods involving two apparatuses when using the Tempe cell.
