Los ritmos de la provocación: estudio discursivo del rap, trap y reguetón en español

Music is one of the richest and most rewarding human expressions for most people. Not only does it provoke emotions, feelings, and experiences almost in a therapeutic way, but it also constitutes a fundamental pillar of culture. Nevertheless, as it reflects our mindset, beliefs, and feelings of affection and disaffection in social life, there is no consensus on the reception of such expressions. Urban music, as part of this heritage, is often a controversial issue since its quality as a cultural product and as an element of influence of certain mentalities, especially in the younger population, is sometimes questioned. In Spain, more than half of the artists listen weekly on the main music platforms belong to urban genres, some of these songs (and artists) have been considered sexist since its content is thought to perpetuate attitudes of patriarchy and the gender system. From the interrelation of these premises derives the justification for research papers that focus on the discursive expressions of the artists. In this way, this doctoral thesis attempts to contribute to discourse studies through a multidisciplinary analysis of the lyrics of three musical genres: rap, trap and reggaeton. The introductory chapter describes the origins of the mentioned genres, their identifying features, the phenomenon of the importation of this music into Spain, the development of a personal scene, and the presence and rise of female voices in musical styles that, historically, have been developed by men. After defining the objectives in the second chapter, the third chapter explains the theoretical framework from the linguistic, pragmatic, sociolinguistic and discursive perspectives. Then, the fourth chapter describes the status of the issue regarding the most relevant studies on the musical genres and we can see a discontinuity in the publication of studies about the examination of their texts. The fifth chapter presents the methodology used in the process of developing this research work. It describes that, from a pre-selection of almost nine hundred songs classified according to various criteria such as the topics, linguistic and pragmatic aspects, the reflection of social and interpersonal relationships, how woman are treated, etc., a final corpus of sixty songs was delimited to carry out a systematized and homogeneous multidisciplinary analysis of theses characteristics that allowed us to study the distinctive features of the three urban genres. The analysis of the texts is carried out in the sixth chapter, which is organized into respective sections for each area of knowledge (lexical, morphosyntactic, pragmatic and discursive levels). In rap, trap and reggaeton we have noticed the abundance of slang vocabulary and a great permeability of loanwords, as well as an undeniable linguistic creativity of the artists. The pragmatic level reflects the characteristics of the singers, and it allows for the reconstruction of a conceptual framework of hierarchy, where artists of both genres are placed at the top of the pyramid. From that position, their speeches frequently manifest an intentional force with an effect close to the instruction or subjugation of their recipients. The polyphonic richness is a clear indication that the function of music goes beyond mere entertainment and articulates, on numerous occasions, messages of criticism, protest, and recognition. Regarding the discourse of the female artists in the corpus, we observe two possible interpretations: on the one hand, the texts, with a high presence of sexual content, convey a role of women as objects of desire, obeying the perpetuation of the creative molds of these genres by men; on the other hand, the lyrics of these songs are consciously projected by women as another expression of feminism that pursues empowerment through sexual freedom. We close the research with some conclusions in the seventh chapter, as well as the bibliography used in the thesis in the eighth chapter, and the incorporation of transcriptions, both in their standard and semi-phonetic form in the annexes, which also include other material illustrating the analysis and results.La música es una de las manifestaciones humanas más ricas y enriquecedoras, en muchos sentidos, para la mayoría de las personas. No solo suscita emociones, sentimientos y vivencias de manera casi terapéutica, sino que constituye un pilar fundamental de la cultura. Sin embargo, y quizá por ello, al ser reflejo de la mentalidad, las creencias, las afecciones y desafecciones de la vida en sociedad, no existe un consenso en la recepción de dichas manifestaciones. La llamada música urbana, como parte de este patrimonio, a menudo se sitúa en el centro de la polémica, puesto que, en ocasiones, se pone en tela de juicio su calidad como producto cultural y como elemento de influencia de ciertas mentalidades, sobre todo en la población más joven. En España, más de la mitad de los artistas que se escuchan semanalmente a través de las principales plataformas musicales pertenecen a los géneros urbanos, algunas de cuyas canciones (y cantantes) se han considerado machistas por entenderse que perpetúan con su contenido actitudes propias del patriarcado y del sistema de género. De la interrelación de estas premisas se deriva la justificación de investigaciones que se centren en las expresiones discursivas de estos artistas. Así, la presente tesis doctoral trata de contribuir a los estudios del discurso mediante un análisis multidisciplinar de las letras de canciones de tres de estos géneros musicales: el rap, el trap y el reguetón. En un primer capítulo introductorio se describen los orígenes de dichos géneros, sus rasgos identificativos, el fenómeno de la importación de estas músicas en España, el consecuente desarrollo de un panorama propio, y la presencia y auge de voces femeninas en unos estilos que, históricamente, han sido desarrollados por hombres. Tras la delimitación de los objetivos en el capítulo segundo, se expone el marco teórico desde las perspectivas lingüística, pragmática, sociolingüística y discursiva en el que se basa nuestra investigación, en el capítulo tercero. A continuación, en el cuarto, se describe el estado de la cuestión relativo a los estudios más relevantes acerca de estos géneros musicales y se observa cierta discontinuidad en la publicación de trabajos dedicados a examinar sus textos. El quinto capítulo da paso a la presentación de la metodología empleada en el proceso de elaboración de este trabajo. Allí se describe que, de una preselección de casi novecientas canciones, clasificadas en función de criterios variados como los temas tratados, los aspectos lingüísticos y pragmáticos destacables, el reflejo de las relaciones sociales e interpersonales, el tratamiento de la mujer, etc., se delimitó un corpus final formado por sesenta, en aras de la realización de un análisis multidisciplinar sistematizado y homogéneo de esos rasgos que nos ha permitido estudiar las particularidades de estos tres géneros urbanos. El análisis de los textos se lleva a cabo en el sexto capítulo, que se organiza en sendos apartados por cada ámbito de conocimiento (nivel léxico, morfosintáctico y pragmático y discursivo). De este modo, en el rap, el trap y el reguetón hemos constatado, especialmente, la abundancia de un léxico jergal y una gran permeabilidad de préstamos, así como una innegable creatividad lingüística de los artistas. El nivel pragmático es fiel reflejo de las características coyunturales de los cantantes y permite reconstruir un marco conceptual de jerarquía, donde artistas de ambos géneros quedan situados en lo más alto de la pirámide. Desde esa posición, sus discursos manifiestan con frecuencia una fuerza intencional con un efecto cercano al aleccionamiento o sometimiento de sus destinatarios. La riqueza polifónica supone un claro indicio de que la función de la música va más allá del mero entretenimiento y articula, en numerosas ocasiones, mensajes de crítica, protesta y reivindicación. En este sentido, en lo concerniente al discurso femenino de las cantantes del corpus, observamos dos posibles interpretaciones: una, que los textos, con una gran presencia de contenido sexual, trasluzcan un rol de la mujer como objeto de deseo, obedeciendo a la perpetuación de los moldes creativos habituales de estos géneros por parte del hombre; otra, que las letras de estas canciones se proyecten por las mujeres de manera consciente como una expresión más del feminismo que persigue el empoderamiento a través de la libertad sexual. Cerramos la investigación con una serie de conclusiones derivadas del trabajo, en el séptimo capítulo, así como con la bibliografía utilizada, en el octavo, y la incorporación de transcripciones, tanto en su forma estándar como semifonética en los anexos, donde figuran, además, otros materiales ilustrativos del análisis y sus resultados
