A conference to discuss the mid-Atlantic rabies outbreak was held in 1983 at the National Zoo facility in Front Royal. A live oral rabies vaccine has successfully halted the spread of fox rabies in Europe. Still, it is unclear if a similar approach would work in the USA, where raccoons are the primary wildlife vector for rabies.
