Calendering consists of running a sheet of paper at high pressure and speed (contact time less than 1 ms) between at least two heated rolls so as to improve the paper surface quality. However, this operation reduces paper thickness. Our study focused on the mechanical behaviour of paper in the nip and on the surface interactions between the paper and the rolls. Different grades of printing and writing paper were studied (coated, un-coated).Two spherical indentation tests on paper samples were developed (falling ball and quasi-static compression) and calendering trials were performed.
