Corrosion patterns in automotive bodies can be classified into two categories: cosmetic corrosion and perforation corrosion. Cosmetic corrosion affects the outside appearance whereas perforation corrosion occurs in confined areas, (e.g. lap joints) in the presence of trapped water in holes. The severity of this type of corrosion is evidenced by perforation of body panels and chassis components. The aim of this study is a better understanding of perforation corrosion mechanisms. A corrosion cell has been developed to reproduce in laboratory the corrosion conditions, and to enable local pH measurements.
