There is an increasing societal concern for the welfare of farm animals. The European project Welfare Quality® aims at developing a standard for the assessment of and information about animal welfare. Welfare is composed of several dimensions (health, behaviour, absence of stress...). Hence, its overall evaluation is based on a set of complementary measures. The objective of this PhD thesis is to develop a model for the overall assessment of the welfare of dairy cows, which respects the multidimensionality of the welfare concept.
