In cooperative networks, multiple nodes cooperate to form a virtual antenna array and exploit space-time diversity. The relay channel is first investigated. In order to improve performance at low SNRs, an adaptive strategy is proposed for both amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) protocols. This strategy chooses the best transmission scheme in term of mutual information for each channel realization. To define an easily implementable and efficient DF protocol, we propose to use an incomplete decoding at relays. This technique provides both full rate and full diversity.
