This study has been developed within the Heliosat Project of Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris. The goals of this project are: (i) to design a system for the estimation of incident solar radiation at ground level from images of the Earth acquired by geostationary satellites; (ii) to produce detailed maps of the spatial distribution of the global solar radiation; and (iii) to improve the system in relation with the results and progress in science. The original model of Cano (1982) has been improved and completed based on the following theorical studies: (i) calculation of the monthly mean of the daily sum of solar global radiation; (ii) use of the system for any geographical area located in the field of view of the satellite sens...
