Dear readers, We present to you the volume 20, nº 2 of 2023 of the Brazilian Business Review. An issue with several topics that discuss impairment and disclosure, economic policy uncertainty and M&A operations, geographic diversification of businesses, fan identification on eSports and traditional Sports, organizational ambidexterity and collective competencies. Opening the issue, Ferreira and Morais investigate the impact that increasing the frequency of interim reporting has on the amount of impairment losses on financial assets for a sample of listed banks. They applied difference-in-differences for a paired sample of 36 banks of Eu-15 and find the existence of a negative and significant association between the increase in the frequency of interim reporting and the amount of impairment losses on financial assets recognized in the profit or loss. This study is useful for regulators and supervisors because, according to the authors, it presents relevant conclusions for the definition of the frequency of interim reporting, showing the consequences of its increase. https://bit.ly/3WEVJCV Our second paper investigates the effect of Economic Policy Uncertainty on Mergers and Acquisitions operations of listed companies in Brazil. For this purpose, Batista, Lamounier, and Mário have run a binomial logistic regression model to verify the impact of Economic Policy Uncertainty on the propensity for Mergers and Acquisitions in the following year. In this regard, authors identified that Economic Policy Uncertainty reduces the propensity of acquiring firms to engage in Mergers and Acquisitions activities, consistent with international evidence. This study contributes to a series of emerging discussions on factors triggered by economic policy uncertainty that can alter the dynamics of corporate decisions. https://bit.ly/3J3nZex Next, Júnior and Pereira present a paper that proposes a theoretical framework to analyze the effects of international diversification on the performance of companies based on the dynamism, complexity, and munificence of the companies’ operating environment, integrating the theoretical aspects of the Upstream-downstream Hypothesis, Contingency theory and RBV. In this regard, they contribute to the state of the art by proposing the theoretical aspects integration of different theories in the analysis of the relationship between international diversification and performance and allowing the outlining of opportunities for future research. https://bit.ly/3Y5TQ2o In our fourth paper, Cardoso and Almeida investigated the influence of eSports fan identification on traditional sports teams and vice-versa, specifically in cases where there is an intersection of soccer teams and the eSports world. To do so, they used the PAI (Points of Attachment Index) scale, the Social Identity Theory, with data collected during eSports events in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 2019, in addition to Structural Equations to test the hypotheses of the work. Their empirical findings suggest that the identification of a fan with a soccer club exerts a positive influence on the identification of the fan with the club’s eSports team, but the opposite cannot be stated. https://bit.ly/3YDr4ri The next paper aims to identify the constitutive elements and main collective competencies (CC) in the Lunelli Group Creation Center’s work teams, a business group focused on the fashion industry from the state of Santa Catarina in Brazil. In this regard, Silva and Ghedine conducted semi-structured interviews (with 36 employees from 6 work teams of the Lunelli Group’s brands), in addition to performing participant observation, and found results that demonstrate that the main CCs, identified based on their constitutive elements, were the capacities to cooperate, create, planning collection, decision-making, solve problems, approval collection, and meet goals. The authors suggest that these CCs will allow organizations to understand teams’ collective activities better, making it possible to develop the disabled CCs and form the absent CCs necessary to improve the team’s performance and contribute to the organizational results. https://bit.ly/3I0IqIZ Closing the issue, Sartori and Garrido discuss the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and innovation. By means of a narrative literature review, covering recent empirical studies, they identified limits of knowledge in this field, giving rise to propositions for its advancement, in theoretical and managerial aspects. Para isso, Batista, Lamounier e Mário aplicaram um modelo de regressão logística binomial que verifica o impacto da Incerteza da Política Econômica na propensão para Fusões e Aquisições no ano seguinte. Nesse contexto, os autores identificaram que a Incerteza da Política Econômica reduz a propensão de as firmas adquirentes se engajarem nas atividades de Fusões e Aquisições, consistente com as evidências internacionais. Esse estudo contribui com uma série de discussões emergentes sobre os fatores desencadeados pela incerteza da política econômica que podem alterar a dinâmica das decisões corporativas. https://bit.ly/3J3nZex Em seguida, Júnior e Pereira apresentam um paper que propõe um framework teórico para analisar os efeitos da diversificação internacional no desempenho das empresas com base no dinamismo, complexidade e munificência do ambiente operacional das empresas, integrando os aspectos teóricos da hipótese Upstream-downstream, teoria Contingencial e VBR. Nesse contexto, eles contribuem com o estado-da-arte propondo a integração de aspectos teóricos de diferentes teorias na análise da relação entre diversificação internacional e desempenho e permitindo o delineamento de oportunidades de futuras pesquisas. https://bit.ly/3Y5TQ2o No nosso quarto artigo, Cardoso e Almeida investigaram a influência da identificação do fã de eSports em times esportivos tradicionais e vice-versa, especificamente nos casos em que há uma interseção de times de futebol e o mundo dos eSports. Para isso, eles utilizaram a escala PAI (Points of Attachment Index), a teoria da Identidade Social, com dados coletados durante eventos de eSports na cidade do Rio de Janeiro no ano de 2019, além de Equações Estruturais para testar as hipóteses do trabalho. Os resultados empíricos sugerem que a identificação do fã com um clube de futebol exerce influência positiva na identificação do fã com o time de eSports do mesmo clube, mas não se pode afirmar o contrário. https://bit.ly/3YDr4ri Nosso próximo artigo busca identificar os elementos constitutivos e as principais competências coletivas (CC) nas equipes de trabalho do Núcleo de Criação do Grupo Lunelli, grupo empresarial de Santa Catarina com foco na indústria da moda. Nesse sentido, Silva e Ghedine realizaram entrevistas semiestruturadas (com 36 colaboradores de 6 equipes de trabalho das marcas do Grupo Lunelli), além da observação participante e encontraram resultados que demonstram que as principais CCs, identificadas a partir de seus elementos constitutivos, foram a capacidade de cooperar, criar, planejar a coleção, tomar decisões, resolver problemas, aprovar a coleção e cumprir metas. Os autores sugerem que estas CCs permitirão às organizações uma melhor compreensão das atividades coletivas das equipes, possibilitando desenvolver CCs deficientes e formar CCs ausentes, necessárias para melhorar o desempenho da equipe e contribuir com os resultados organizacionais. https://bit.ly/3I0IqIZ Fechando a edição, Sartori e Garrido abordam a relação entre ambidestria organizacional e inovação. Por meio de uma revisão narrativa de literatura, abrangendo estudos empíricos recentes, os autores identificaram limites do conhecimento nesse campo, dando origem a proposições para seu avanço, em aspectos teóricos e gerenciais.
