«Nos ací ab plens poders». Leonor de Sicilia como lugarteniente del rey Pedro el Ceremonioso durante la guerra contra Castilla (1363-1365)

In this article we focused on the transformation of the queen consort role in the Late Middle Ages. This evolution was driven by a difficult war context such as the War between the Crown of Castile and the Crown of Aragon. The also known as the War of the Two Peters was an extensive and complex conflict that faced the Crowns of Castile and Aragon between 1356 and 1366 and with skirmishes and specific episodes until 1375. Although the conflict seemed limited to the differences and ambitions of both monarchies, soon it involved the rest of the Iberian monarchies and some European ones, taking part for each of the sides. The expansion made diplomacy a fundamental instrument for the development and conclusion of the conflict. The long duration had political, military and financial consequences but it also served to redefine the administrative framework of the monarchy. In this paper we will analyse the role of Eleanor of Sicily as lieutenant in the most difficult years of the war. In the summer of 1363, when the king travelled to Valencia to lift the siege of the Castilian troops, Queen Eleanor was in charge of procuring everything necessary, especially financial resources. The analysis of the queen's actions during her tenure in 1363 shows the difficulties to ensure the payments the Kingdoms had committed themselves. At all times, Queen Eleanor transmitted her message as a representative of the monarchy and the needs of the king, who at that time needed to project an image of strength during the peace negotiations. The queen herself pressured the territorial authorities to obtain financing for the king's troops. In 1364 the queen was again appointed lieutenant that year, collaborating in the sale of the royal patrimony. But if Eleanor’s political activity during this tenure has been remembered for something, it is because of her role in the indictment and condemnation of Bernat de Cabrera, King Pedro's most important adviser to date. The queen initiated the accusation and coordinated the action with the Justicia of Aragon and the rest of the authorities. That same year there were two fundamental innovations for the future development of the Lieutenancy. In the first place, the existence of different lieutenants at the same time, all of them responding to the authority held by Queen Eleanor. And, secondly, the presence of the queen in the Catalan Parliament (Cortes), which would set a precedent that would be repeated in key circumstances in the future. With this analysis we will grasp the collaboration between the royal couple in the governmental task. Moreover, the paper will define the queen's own capacity and her authority as executor of the sovereign's requests before the other members of the political community.En este artículo analizamos los cambios acontecidos en el papel de la reina Leonor de Sicilia impulsados por una difícil coyuntura bélica como la Guerra de los Dos Pedros, que fue un extenso y complejo conflicto que enfrentó a las Coronas de Castilla y Aragón entre 1356 a 1366, con escaramuzas y episodios concretos hasta 1375. La larga duración de los enfrentamientos tuvo unas enormes consecuencias en materia política, militar, financiera o humana, pero también sirvió para redefinir el cuadro administrativo de la monarquía. Para explicar las atribuciones de la reina como lugarteniente, analizaremos la lugartenencia de Leonor de Sicilia en los años más difíciles de la contienda bélica. En verano de 1363, cuando el rey se desplazó hasta Valencia para levantar el asedio de las tropas castellanas, la reina se encargó de procurar todo aquello necesario, especialmente en lo referente a recursos monetarios. El análisis de las actuaciones de la reina durante su ejercicio en 1363 demuestra las dificultades de la monarquía para conseguir que los brazos materializaran las demandas a las que se habían comprometido. En todo momento la reina Leonor transmitió su mensaje como representante de la monarquía y de las necesidades del rey, que en aquel momento necesitaba proyectar una imagen de fuerza durante las negociaciones de paz. En 1364, la reina volvió a ser nombrada lugarteniente para ese año, colaborando en la venta de real patrimonio. Pero si por algo ha sido recordada la actividad política de la reina durante esta lugartenencia es por su papel en la condena de Bernat de Cabrera, el consejero más importante del rey Pedro hasta la fecha. La reina inició su imputación y coordinó la acción con el Justicia de Aragón y el resto de las autoridades para llevarlo a cabo. Ese mismo año se produjeron dos innovaciones fundamentales para el futuro desarrollo de la lugartenencia. En primer lugar, la existencia de distintos lugartenientes a la vez, respondiendo todos ellos a la autoridad ostentada por la reina Leonor. Y, en segundo, la presencia de la reina en las Cortes catalanas, lo que sentaría un precedente que se repetiría en circunstancias clave en el futuro. Con este análisis veremos la colaboración entre la pareja regia en la tarea gubernativa, intentando concretar la capacidad propia de la reina y su autoridad como ejecutora de las peticiones del soberano ante los otros miembros de la comunidad política
