Women in Sport Broadcasting

This research project was studied over the course of the fall semester of the 2018-2019 school year. The information was collected through twitter to find what people thought about the woman commentators on Fox Sports, one is including Aly Wagner. Aly Wagner was the first woman to commentate on the men’s world cup game this past summer of 2018, something that had never even been thought of before this summer. Instead of being a sideline reporter that was used just for her appearance, Wagner was given the opportunity to do perform a job that is mainly dominated by men. Past research has indicated that women are not accepted in masculine sports, such as football, soccer, hockey, or anything that requires aggression or physical activity. Wagner made history by commentating on a men’s World Cup, however the reactions to this event were mixed. By putting parameters in place, data was able to be found through twitter searches. The hypothesis stated that the comments found would be prodiminstrly negative due to what past research has uncovered. However, the research shows that the hypothesis was surprisingly not entirely correct. Positive comments supporting Aly Wagner were apparent, which shows progress in the sport world for women. Along with the positive feedback, there were also very harsh comments that proved that the hypothesis was partly correct. The data found that while women are slowly starting to be accepted in the sports world, there is still a lot of work to be done to have them be respected
