Evil and heresy in the sacred oratory of Archbishop Manuel José Mosquera y Arboleda (1835–1852): a history of the beliefs of mid-19th century Catholicism

ilustraciones, tablasLa presente tesis parte de preguntarse cómo la religión católica se hace creíble, proponiendo como medio de indagación la tensión entre lo que se define como verdadero y aquello que se condena como falso por parte de una autoridad religiosa, la cual estará representada por el arzobispo Manuel José Mosquera, máximo jerarca de la institución eclesiástica entre 1835 y 1852. Los materiales que sirvieron para indagar dicha tensión corresponden a las piezas de la oratoria sagrada atribuidas a su autoría, espacialmente los sermones y las cartas y edictos pastorales compendiados en 1858 por el hermano gemelo del eclesiástico, Manuel María Mosquera, en el Tomo I de los Documentos para la biografía e historia del Episcopado del Ilustrísimo señor don Manuel José Mosquera. El análisis propuesto parte de preguntarse por las representaciones a movilizar a partir del Demonio —en tanto representación simbólica del mal—, así como los elementos constitutivos del campo semántico de la herejía, con la intención de brindar algunas hipótesis historiográficas para comprender aquello que se toma por cierto por parte de los feligreses neogranadinos de mediados de siglo desde la persuasión de la oratoria sagrada, la cual está influenciada y responde a las dinámicas socio-históricas de las relaciones entre el Estado, la Iglesia institucional, la sociedad, la religión, la política y las configuraciones globales del catolicismo, para lo cual se esbozan algunas problemáticas que el arzobispo procura posicionar de suma relevancia en los escritos señalados. El prelado se juega en ellos la necesidad de sostener el consenso socio-religioso a partir de la condena a las desviaciones definidas como tales, retomando para ello elementos de la prédica y prácticas católicas cimentadas sobre el monopolio de la “tradición” que auguran la estabilidad de la única institución capaz de asegurar la felicidad después de la muerte. (Texto tomado de la fuente).This thesis is based on asking how the Catholic religion becomes credible, proposing as a means of inquiry the tension between what is defined as true and what is condemned as false by a religious authority, which will be represented by the Archbishop Manuel José Mosquera, maximum hierarch of the ecclesiastical institution between 1835 and 1852. The materials that served to investigate said tension correspond to the pieces of the sa-cred oratory attributed to his authorship, especially the sermons and the letters and pas-toral edicts summarized in 1858 by the twin brother of the ecclesiastic, Manuel María Mosquera, in Volume I of the Documents for the biography and history of the Episco-pate of the Illustrious Mr. Manuel José Mosquera. The proposed analysis starts from wondering about the representations to be mobilized from the Demon —as a symbolic representation of evil— as well as the constituent elements of the semantic field of here-sy, with the intention of providing some historiographical hypotheses to understand what which is taken for granted by the New Granadan parishioners of the mid-century from the persuasion of sacred oratory, which is influenced by and responds to the socio-historical dynamics of the relations between the State, the institutional Church, society, the religion, politics and the global configurations of Catholicism, for which some prob-lems are outlined that the archbishop tries to position as highly relevant in the afore-mentioned writings. The prelate stakes on them the need to sustain the socio-religious consensus from the condemnation of deviations defined as such, taking up elements of preaching and Catholic practices based on the monopoly of “tradition” that predict the stability of the only institution capable of ensuring happiness after death.Incluye anexosMaestríaMagíster en Histori
