NUTRITIONAL MANAGEMENT OF AGING (University of Benin, Master's Degree Term Paper)

Aging is characterized by changes in the physiology as well as the social and emotional makeup of individuals. Several therapies and treatment approaches are advanced to handle the process of aging, out of which nutrition stand out significantly. This term paper described the meaning of aging. It identifies the markers of Active and Healthy Aging to include economic determinants, health and social services system, physical environment, social determinants, behavioural determinants, cultural and personal determinants. The role of nutrition in aging was discussed, particularly the nutrient needs for the aged. It graphically presents the interaction between nutrition and health related issues during aging, such as cardiovascular disease, inflammation and dementia (or brain function). Finally, it recommends the adoption of the Mediterranean Diet pyramid in composing food for the elderly.
