Potential of epigallocatechin gallate as an antioxidant for the developing fetus

Tea is the second most popular beverage in the world below water, and the popularity of green tea is on the rise due to its many health benefits. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most bioactive compound in green tea, and research is attributing many of green teas health benefits to it, especially for its antioxidant ability. Antioxidants are needed to balance the levels of radical species in the body, and with an imbalance of more radicals to antioxidants, damage to many vital physiological mechanisms and compounds can ensue. This state is known as oxidative stress, and can cause congenital defects in developing embryos. However, EGCG can also work as a prooxidant, which could worsen the oxidative stress and cause more harm. This review explores the efficacy of EGCG as an antioxidant for the developing fetus, by highlighting the results of its application across several studies. In compiling this research, it was determined that EGCG exhibits more potential as a beneficial antioxidant therapy than potential as a prooxidant cause of harm.Honors CollegeThesis (B.?
