Cells sense and respond to their environment using signaling pathways. The ERK pathway responds to growth factors to influence migration, gene expression, and proliferation. Because of these roles, the ERK pathway is frequently mutated in human cancers, but different mutations in ERK signaling components cause unpredictable phenotypes. Fluorescent reporters recently showed that the temporal patterns of ERK activity, or dynamics, respond to changes in growth factor availability to affect cell behaviors.
