Friction stir welding is a process used to assemble 2000 series aluminium alloys often used in aircraft industry. This process could lead to the replacement of the riveting technology allowing a significant economic gain. Numerical simulations, which allow better control of the process, can describe the thermomechanical history in the material. However, in order to predict the mechanical properties of the weld joint of heat treatable alloys, the simulation must take into account the evolution of the precipitation with reasonable computing time.
