La chronologie politique du Sūhu au VIIIe siècle

International audienceFrom the beginning of the 9th century BC to the middle of the 8th century, the middle Euphrates area was claimed by the Assyrians, especially the small principality of Sūhu. However, due to the Babylonian influence, the Assyrian domination was far from being firm and the eastern Sūhu mainly escaped the dominance of Aššur.On the basis of data convoyed by the Assyrian texte and by the ones coming from Sūhu itself, we propose a reconstitution of the middle Euphrates area history during this period. We propose that the entire Sūhu was definitively conquered when the Assyrians, under Tiglath-pileser III, conducted military operations against Babylonia. First he isolated Sūhu from Babylonia in 745, when he intervened in North Babylonia, around the Patti-Enlil canal as far as Rapiqu. A second period of war in Babylonia took place in the years 731-729 when the Assyrian king overthrew Nabu-mukin-zeri and took possession of south Mesopotamia. In any case, Sūhu was integrated to the Assyrian empire at the latest in the end of the years 730, as attested by the Aššur-šallimanni’s correspondence. Going back in time, western Sūhu, which capital was Ānat, was conquered by the Assyrians under the reign of Adad-nerari III. It is difficult to evaluate the role played by Palil-ereš here. Ānat fell into the Assyrian’s hands 53 years before Ninurta-kudurri-uṣur, the last “governor” of the eastern Sūhu, ascended to the throne. Indeed, the city was captured by Šamaš-reš-uṣur, his father, only three years before his death, and not three years after he himself ascended to the throne, as generally accepted. Following this reconstitution, and taking 745 as the most probable year of the ultimate Assyrian conquest of the whole Sūhu, Šamaš-reš-uṣur and Ninurta-kudurri-uṣur reigned during the period ca.770 and 745.Entre le début du IXe siècle et la deuxième moitié du VIIIe , la région du moyen Euphrate, et plus spécifiquement le Sūhu, fut revendiquée par l’Assyrie, mais la domination assyrienne effective fut des plus fluctuantes de sorte que la partie orientale du Sūhu échappa largement à la mainmise des rois d’Aššur.En croisant la documentation proprement sūhéenne et les données assyriennes, il est possible de proposer une reconstitution de l’histoire du moyen Euphrate pendant cette période. Nous proposons que la région passât définitivement sous contrôle assyrien lorsque Tiglath-phalasar III mena des campagnes vers la Babylonie. Deux moments peuvent alors être retenus : le premier en 745, lorsque Tiglath-phalasar III isola le Sūhu de sa protectrice méridionale, la Babylonie ; le second lors de la conquête de cette dernière en 731-729. Dans tous les cas, le Sūhu était bien assyrien au plus tard à la fin des années 730, comme l’atteste la correspondance du gouverneur d’Arrapha, Aššur-šallimanni.En remontant dans le temps, le Sūhu occidental, dont la capitale était Ānat, fut intégré à l’empire sous Adad-nerari III, sans qu’il soit possible de préciser le rôle exact que joua Palil-ereš dans cette affaire. Ānat tomba aux mains des Assyriens 53 ans avant la montée sur le trône du dernier « gouverneur » du Sūhu oriental, Ninurta-kudurri-uṣur. En effet, la ville n’entra dans les possessions de son père, Šamaš-reš-uṣur, que lors de son antépénultième année de règne, et non pas trois ans après qu’il ne soit monté sur le trône comme on le pense généralement. En suivant cette reconstitution, et en adoptant la date de 745 comme limite basse de la fin de l’indépendance du Sūhu, date qui nous semble la plus probable, Šamaš-reš-uṣur et Ninurta-kudurri-uṣur auraient régné entre ca.770 et 745
