International audienceIn 403 BCE the Athenians reconciled after several months of bloody civil war opposing oligarchs and democrats. The two sides took a solemn oath to “forget the wrongs” (mē mnēsikakein) that had torn them apart, and democracy was restored. For Nicole Loraux, the city as a whole chose this amnesty in order to repel the terrifying specter of civil war (stasis). This article seeks to reconsider this vision of unanimity, taking as its starting point one of the major figures of the Athenian reconciliation, Archinos.
