Les pratiques funéraires à l’Âge du fer en Basse-Normandie : premiers éléments de réflexion

International audienceThis article attempts a regional overview, substantially updating the data that was available for the last survey in 1990. The various aspects considered in this conference are none the less very unevenly represented. Although a wide-ranging anthropological study is not yet possible, the variable presence of different age and sex cohorts is however apparent in the organisation of certain cemeteries, particularly at the end of the First, and beginning of the Second, Iron Ages. Age and sex characteristics are also significant in the composition of double graves. Initial characterization of cemeteries by the numbers of burials they contain, their relationship to settlement evidence and the presence or absence of associated monuments, identifies four categories taking cognizance of the arrangement of the dead. On this basis, relationships with different types of rural community are hypothesized. As regards the treatment of the dead, different body positions are examined in relation to other traits (e.g. cemetery organization, sex, age). The impact of the introduction of cremation into a funerary tradition based on the decomposition of the body is considered. Gravegoods are analysed with regard to the specific character of objects found with inhumations and with cremations.Cet article vise à rendre compte du potentiel régional qui, depuis le dernier bilan effectué en 1990, a connu un profond renouvellement. Pourtant, les différents champs retenus lors de ce colloque restent inégalement documentés. Si une approche anthropologique globale est pour l’heure encore prématurée, en revanche un recrutement des défunts selon le genre ou l’âge est un critère parfois perceptible dans l’organisation des espaces funéraires, notamment à la fin du premier âge du fer et au début du second. À l’échelle de la tombe, ce critère joue également un rôle dans la composition des sépultures doubles. Une première catégorisation des sites funéraires, selon leurs effectifs, leur relation à l’habitat et la présence de monument, distingue quatre groupes rendant compte de différentes formes d’agrégation des défunts. Sur cette base, sont suggérées des correspondances avec la forme des communautés rurales (village, famille…). Concernant le traitement des défunts, est examinée la posture donnée au corps en lien avec d’autres traits funéraires (organisation des espaces funéraires, âge, sexe…), puis est abordée la question de la crémation pratiquée dans un système funéraire basé sur la décomposition du corps.
