The phenomenon of films shown in art galleries - exhibition cinema - can be understood as a response to two critiques: on one hand the critique of the traditional movie theatre as a space which generates illusion and fusion, and on the other hand the critique of museum space as an ideological space. The response of exhibition cinema is to propose an active experience to the viewer in which he/she has to find his/her position. To what extent can this new kind of space, midway between the black box and the white cube, reconfigure a critical aesthetic experience?
