The phenomenon of films shown in art galleries - exhibition cinema - can be understood as a response to two critiques: on one hand the critique of the traditional movie theatre as a space which generates illusion and fusion, and on the other hand the critique of museum space as an ideological space. The response of exhibition cinema is to propose an active experience to the viewer in which he/she has to find his/her position. To what extent can this new kind of space, midway between the black box and the white cube, reconfigure a critical aesthetic experience? However this experience does not consist of the exhibition and display of films alone, regardless of the meaning of the artworks and of way they interact with the viewer. It is important to consider the works' material and formal properties in order to analyse in situ the nature and function of those spaces they create which are coextensive with the films. Furthermore this enquiry opens the question of how the world might enter into the space of art and how that penetration might enable, in the very same movement, awareness of self and world.À la double critique du dispositif cinématographique traditionnel considéré comme vecteur de cécité, d’illusion et de fusion, et de l’espace muséal comme espace idéologiquement conditionné, le cinéma d’exposition semble répondre, en proposant au spectateur une expérience active où il doit trouver sa place. Dans quelle mesure ce nouvel espace, à mi-chemin entre la black box et le white cube, est-il à même de redessiner les contours d’une expérience esthétique de nature critique ?Cette expérience ne saurait toutefois tenir à cette seule mise en espace des films, dans l’indifférence de ce que les œuvres disent et de la manière dont elles agissent. Il importe dès lors de convoquer leur réalité matérielle et formelle pour analyser, en situation, la nature et fonction des espaces co-extensifs aux films qu’elles génèrent et se demander si le monde peut s’introduire dans l’espace de l’art et comment cette pénétration peut être à même de générer, dans le même mouvement, une conscience de soi et de cette réalité
