International audienceThéodule Ribot (1839-1916), who played a significant role in the development of scientific psychology in France, was one of the first to consider the relationship between memory and emotions. Ribot thought that there was a specific memory of emotions, which was a particular kind of what he called “affective memory”. This idea initiated a controversy about the existence, the definition and the content of the notion of “affective memory” in the scientific psychology community of his time. The present article provides a synthesis and a critical analysis of the theoretical development of the concept of "affective memory" in the beginning of the 20th century.
