International audienceThis study, produced by a group of six people who worked together for three years, sought to re-evaluate the contribution of Christianity to the notion of the person. It reviewed the history of three words: persona, prosôpon and hypostasis, from their classical meanings in the Greek and Latin languages of ancient paganism, to their enrichment as Christianity used them in its own theological debates (Trinitarian doctrine and Christology), during Late Antiquity and the High Middle Ages (until Boethius and John Damascene).The assessment underlines the decisive but unfinished contribution of Christian theology in the first medieval centuries to the philosophical notion of the person, which would have to wait for centuries ...
