Introduction: The complex Rohingya humanitarian crisis

The Rohingya people are considered distinct from the majority in Burma, being Muslim and more South Asian. There is a growing literature on the Rohingya crisis; this chapter represents a collection of papers which mainly focuses on the human rights, legal, and international relations surrounding this complex humanitarian crisis, the enormity of which cannot be overemphasized. The present-day armed struggle for the Muslim Rohingya is conducted under the banner of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army. In February 2021, the Burmese Army staged a coup, declared a state of emergency, and imposed martial law across the country. With the return of direct military rule in 2021 and economic developments in Rakhine State, conditions do not bode well for either the return or the reconciliation with Rohingya refugees. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book
