This paper focuses on a French medieval monument: the Fleury Abbey in Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire (France), one of the most significant buildings of the European Middle Ages that provides an excellent example of pre-Romanesque architecture (11th century). This building underwent several transformations since its foundation in the 7th century, and in order to understand the complex history of the building and of its decoration, a new art-historical research was conducted. Firstly, archival research, historiographical and material data were collected and analysed in a wider European cultural and artistic frame.
