Living in the Landscape -kesäkoulu 2022:Dwellers in the landscape

Dwellers in the Landscape -näyttely esittelee taideteoksia, jotka ovat syntyneet puoli vuotta kestäneen kurssin aikana taideperustaisissa prosesseissa. Samaan aikaan näyttelyn kanssa julkistetaan saman niminen virtuaalinäyttely ja katalogi, joka sisältää myös osallistujien visuaalisia esseitä. My work investigates diferent manifestations of ownership, discourse and encounters in landscapes. During LiLa 2022, I started paying attention to how I perceived my daily neighborhood while I walked my dog. Although we usually walked in solitude without meeting many passersby, I began to sense quite strong atmospheres and attitudes of the neighborhood via diferent signs placed here and there.I argue that we Finns are proud of our everyman’s rights that give us all thefreedom to roam and harvest nature’s produce regardless of ourland ownership.Te Finnish Environmental Advisor Pekka Tuunanen (Nyyssönen, 2015) nevertheless remarked that when Finns own something, they easily go into hedgehogdefense of their owned areas. Such an approach is not valued in our society, however, and no one willingly wants to admit being petty. Installing a sign clearlydelivers the wanted message while giving the beneft of anonymity. I am no better than the sign installers. I fnd myself usually on both sides, as a skier hating when people walk on ski tracks and as a walker fnding it unfair that only skiers are considered in nature during winters.
