La Computer art nel dibattito critico-curatoriale italiano degli anni Ottanta

Since the mid-1980s, in the Italian context, there have been several exhibitions dedicated to Computer Art and the relationship between computer science and the visual arts. In this period, especially thanks to the spread of the personal computer, artists began making works using programming languages and digitally processed images and videos. The essay aims to reconstruct the critical and curatorial debate around the emergence of Computer art in Italy through the analysis of four seminal exhibitions: Technology and Informatics (1986), organized as part of the 42nd edition of the Venice Biennale’s International Art Exhibition; Arte e Computer (1987), curated by Renato Barilli; Computer Image (1987) curated by Franco Masotti and Claudia Ricci; and I frattali: la geometria dell’irregolare (1988), held at Palazzo Braschi in Rome, curated by Maurizio Calvesi and Michele Emmer. The article aims to investigate the main theoretical issues related to the spread of Computer Art in Italy, showing similarities and differences among the selected exhibitions.Dalla metà degli anni Ottanta, nel contesto italiano, si sono susseguite diverse mostre dedicate alla computer art e al rapporto tra informatica e arti visive. In questo periodo, soprattutto grazie alla diffusione del personal computer, gli artisti hanno iniziato a realizzare opere utilizzando linguaggi di programmazione e hanno elaborato digitalmente immagini e video. Il saggio mira a ricostruire il dibattito critico e curatoriale attorno all’emersione della Computer art in Italia attraverso l’analisi di quattro mostre seminali: Tecnologia e Informatica (1986), organizzata nell’ambito della 42° edizione dell’Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte della Biennale di Venezia; Arte e Computer (1987), a cura di Renato Barilli; Computer Image (1987) curata da Franco Masotti e Claudia Ricci; I frattali: la geometria dell’irregolare (1988), tenutasi a Palazzo Braschi a Roma, con la curatela di Maurizio Calvesi e Michele Emmer. L’articolo intende far emergere le principali problematiche teoriche connesse alla diffusione della Computer Art in Italia, mostrando analogie e differenze – sia di ordine curatoriale che allestitivo – tra le mostre selezionate.&nbsp
