Instabilité structurelle en Méditerranée : entre contournements et raccourcis

International audienceConsidered from a general point of view, the Mediterranean appears at first as a vector of maritime penetration towards the east from the Atlantic coast. Beyond this aspect, the Mediterranean shores present large gulfs, channels, islands... that offer opportunities to make them singular places. The Alps to the north and the Atlas to the south are constraints to the movement of people and goods that define long-distance routes to the Mediterranean shores. On the contrary, several rivers facilitate access to the remote regions of the hinterland. This geographic substratum, generator of strong differences, has played a decisive role for over 25 centuries in the organization of powers around the Mediterranean and their instability.Considérée suivant un point de vue élevé, la mer Méditerranée apparaît tout d'abord comme un vecteur de pénétration maritime vers l'est depuis la côte Atlantique. Au-delà de cet aspect, les rivages méditerranéens présentent des chantournements, des élargissements, des îles… qui offrent autant d'opportunités pour en faire des lieux singuliers. Par ailleurs, les Alpes au nord et l'Atlas au sud constituent des contraintes au déplacement des hommes et des biens qui définissent les itinéraires au long cours vers les rivages méditerranéens. Au contraire, plusieurs fleuves facilitent l'accès aux régions éloignées de l'hinterland. Ce substrat géographique, générateur de fortes différences, joue depuis plus de 25 siècles un rôle déterminant sur l'organisation des pouvoirs le pourtour méditerranéen et de leur instabilité
