International audienceThe Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy (1528-1580) was a centrepiece for the finalisation of the Italian wars and also for the signature of the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis. His duchy, occupied by France from 1536, was given back to him in 1559 with the exception of various strongholds kept among French and Spanish hands until several years after the treaty. During that period, important examples of artistic creation commemorating the peace treaty and also the autonomy of the duchy were produced in Savoy.
