International audienceThis work aims at studying the effective behavior of a composite material (matrix inclusions). The composite is stress free at its outer boundary but the inclusions are subjected to a monotonically increasing isotropic differential swelling. The matrix of this composite is brittle elastic. The onset of the damage of the matrix is first studied, which leads to the proposal of a criterion based on an energy balance, depending on the size and the volume fraction of the inclusions as well as the fracture energy of the constituents.
