Hypoxia modulates bacterial virulence and the inflammation response through hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α). Here we study the influence of hypoxia on Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. In vitro, hypoxia increases the bactericidal activities of epithelial cells against A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa, reducing extracellular bacterial concentrations to 50.5% ± 7.5% and 90.8% ± 13.9%, respectively, at 2 h postinfection. The same phenomenon occurs in macrophages (67.6% ± 18.2% for A. baumannii at 2 h and 50.3% ± 10.9% for P. aeruginosa at 24 h).
