Cavalcanti, Dante, Petrarch : Temporality and Will in the Construction of the lyrical Subject of love Poetry between textual Fragmentation and Cohesion

Cette thèse de doctorat étudie la relation existante entre la forme textuelle des recueils de poésie lyrique amoureuse au Moyen-âge et la construction du sujet lyrique qui anime cette poésie. En particulier, ce travail étudie les cas de Guido Cavalcanti (1258 ? - 1300), Dante Alighieri (1265 – 1321) et François Pétrarque (1304 – 1374). La première partie s’occupe du corpus cavalcantien et problématise l’absence d’un recueil d’auteur, en posant les jalons nécessaires pour saisir l’objet d’étude. Après avoir défini les notions de sujet lyrique et avoir analysé le traitement poétique de l’objet d’amour, une étude comparative avec Dante met en évidence les implications au niveau macrotextuel de leurs différentes conceptions du sujet amoureux. La seconde partie est consacrée principalement à une analyse de la Vita nova dantesque, mais se termine sur une reprise de la poétique de Guido Cavalcanti avec une lecture de la chanson Donna me prega et des influences cavalcantiennes dans un poème tardif de Dante. Le conflit de subjectivités, entre un sujet actif et volitif et un sujet passif, escamote un conflit de temporalité, entre téléologie du récit et circularité absolue lyrique. La troisième partie étudie principalement le Chansonnier de Pétrarque : dans cette œuvre cohabitent les tendances à l’unité du sujet et à la recherche de la linéarité narrative selon le modèle de la conversion dantesque et les tendances à la fragmentation du sujet et à l’éparpillement textuel typique de la poésie de Cavalcanti. Cette troisième partie corrobore l’hypothèse que la forme textuelle puisse être lue comme un corrélatif objectif, un équivalent formel, de la structuration psychologique du sujet lyrique.This doctoral thesis studies the relationship between the textual form of collections of lyric love poetry in the Italian Middle Ages and the construction of the lyrical subject that animates this poetry. The focus is on the cases of Guido Cavalcanti (1258? - 1300), Dante (1265 – 1321) and Petrarch (1304 – 1374). The first provides an analysis of the Cavalcantian corpus and problematizes the absence of an author's collection. After defining the notions of the lyrical subject and analyzing the poetic treatment of lady as an object of love, a comparative study with Dante highlights the macro-textual implications of different conceptions of the amorous subject. The second part is devoted mainly to an analysis of the Vita nova, but ends with a return to the poetics of Guido Cavalcanti with a reading of the song Donna me prega and a focus on Cavalcantian influences in a late poems by Dante. The conflict of subjectivities, between an active and volitional subject and a passive subject, hides a conflict of temporality, between the teleology of the narrative and an absolute lyrical circularity. The third part mainly studies Petrarch's Canzoniere. In this work, two tendencies coexist: the search for narrative linearity and subject’s unity, according to the model of augustinian conversion, and the tendencies towards the fragmentation of the subject. This third part corroborates the hypothesis that the textual form can be read as an objective correlative, a formal equivalent, of the psychological construction of the lyrical subject
