In this short article for the Polish 'Gazeta Wyborcza', I criticise the selectiveness of the Polish police in reporting crime statistics. I explain that these are easily manipulated and that many crimes are not reported to the police. I suggest instead that a lot more emphasis should be placed on studies like the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) which has some less systematic counterparts in Poland. This will allow Polish police to act more efficiently. In addition and more importantly - bigger and more systematic victim surveys will create a well needed challenge for the Polish police, which is increasingly less accountable and developing into a complete tool of control of the Polish Law and Justice party
