Communication between cells is mediated through the release of extracellular vesicles (EVs), which may be composed of a number of molecules including proteins and nucleic acids. In cancer, these vesicles mediate the communication between cancer cells and normal cells and play an important role in cancer progression. They differ in size and their biological contents, but in this thesis, we focused on small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) isolated from cell culture media by ultracentrifugation and iodixanol density gradient. sEVs range in size from 50-200 nm and are enriched with tetraspanins including (CD9, CD63, and CD81) as well as other endosomal markers such as TSG101, and Alix.
