The present review article traces the discoveries that were instrumental to the evolution of DSSCs, taking a critical look at the principles of the operation mechanism and insisting on the most important recent developments in the field. We draw our attention mainly to the dye (photosensitizer); the primary processes that take place inside a solar cell, and which are affected by the dye, are also reviewed along with some of the most significant recent information found in literature that one should keep in mind before designing a novel ruthenium sensitizer.
