Waste management situation and analysis of the households solid waste behaviour patterns in La Gamba, Costa Rica : specific focus on the organic waste fraction

Die Ziele dieser Masterarbeit sind Untersuchungen der gegenwärtigen abfallwirtschaftlichen Situation des Untersuchungsgebietes, La Gamba (Costa Rica) sowie die Verhaltensweisen der Haushalte im Umgang mit Abfall. Ein Fokus wird dabei auf die organische Abfallfraktion gelegt, sowie die Empfehlung für eine geeignete Technik für eine lokale dezentrale Kompostierungsanlage. Den Einstieg in die Arbeit bilden Eckdaten zum Untersuchungsgebiet sowie Angaben zu den gesetzlichen Rahmenbedingungen. Um die Ziele der Arbeit zu erreichen, wurde ein breites Spektrum an Methoden angewandt. Die abfallwirtschaftliche Situation wird mittels Beobachtung (Fotodokumentation, schriftliche Aufzeichnungen) sowie Experteninterviews beschrieben. Zur Informationsgenerierung der Verhaltensweisen der Haushalte dienten leitfadengestützte Interviews vor Ort. Zusätzlich gab eine Sortieranalyse grobe Einblicke in die Abfallzusammensetzung. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung zeigen, dass die Partizipationsbereitschaft der Einwohner, die Einführung der Abfallsammelgebühr sowie das Sammelsystem der Gemeinde die Entsorgungssituation in La Gamba in den letzten Jahren verbesserten. Die Einwohner zeigen eine breite Akzeptanz für Kompostierung, 75% der interviewten Personen sprachen sich positiv für Kompost aus und weitere 75% trennen den organischen Abfall vom Restmüll. Die gebräuchlichste Kompostierungsaktivität im Untersuchungsgebiet ist derzeit die Eigenkompostierung im Garten. Nicht alle Einwohner der Region haben derzeit Zugang zur Abfallsammlung der Gemeinde. Aufgrund der hohen Eigenkompostierungsrate und der geringen Menge an organischem Material im Restmüll wurde kein Potential für die Errichtung einer dezentralen Kompostierungsanlage erkannt. Es bedarf adäquater Infrastruktur für die Abfallentsorgung sowie Bildungsangeboten für die Vermeidung illegaler Entsorgung. Wichtig wäre außerdem eine Stärkung der Fachkenntnisse im Bereich der Kompostierung im Untersuchungsgebiet.A problem in Costa Rica is the inadequate handling of waste. It turned out to be a big environmental and health challenge for the country, typical for low and middle income countries. The aims of this thesis are to examine the current waste management situation, the behaviour patterns of the households of the investigated area, La Gamba,with a focus on the organic waste fraction and the intention to find an appropriate technique for a local and decentralized composting plant. The first part of the thesis gives basic information about the investigated area as well as legal requirements. To reach the aims of the thesis, a diverse spectrum of methods was applied: The waste management situation in the investigated area is described through observation (photo- and written documentation) and expert interviews. Further, face to face interviews give information about the behaviour patterns of the households, and for the characterisation of the households waste a sorting analysis was applied. The results show that in the last years the willingness of the inhabitants to participate, the implementation of the waste fee and the municipal waste collection service improved the disposal situation. The interviews illustrate a broad acceptance for composting and show that 75% out of 40 households have a positive opinion on compost, another 75% separate the organic waste fraction from residual waste. The most common composting activity in the investigated area is individual composting in the garden (backyard composting). It remains a challenge that not all areas have access to the municipal collection service. Due to the high composting rate and the small amount of organic material in the household waste, no potential for a local composting plant was observed.
