Percepção de estudantes do curso de Medicina Veterinária sobre a relação dos maus-tratos aos animais e a violência doméstica

The correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence, especially those practiced against women, the elderly and children, was called The Link Theory, also called Link Theory. This is identified by studies that recognize the ability of an aggressor to act violently, either by direct or indirect actions, against animals and people. The veterinarian, upon realizing that an animal has been abused or domesticised, can report the competent authorities and break this link between the violence of animals and vulnerable humans. Thus, the objective of this work was to describe and compare the perception of students of veterinary medicine, enrolled at the Sertão Campus of the Federal University of Sergipe, on the subject of animal abuse and domestic violence. Forty-two students from the beginning and end of the course were selected as target audience, who answered a questionnaire that had questions related to the theme. The results were tabulated through the Microsoft Excel program, and a descriptive statistic was performed. It was observed that 80% (20/25) of the students enrolled at the beginning of the course never heard about the theory of the link, however 100% (17/17) of the students who were in the last stage of the graduation know the theme. From the data described, it is perceived the importance of the approach in the undergraduate veterinary medicine on the subject, because this is an important profession and acts against the mistreatment of animals and consequently in the cycle of domestic violence.A correlação entre o abuso contra os animais e a violência doméstica, principalmente às praticadas contra mulheres, idosos e crianças, foi denominada de Teoria do Elo. Esta é identificada por estudos que reconhecem a capacidade de um agressor atuar de forma violenta, seja por ações diretas ou indiretas, contra animais e pessoas. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever a percepção dos estudantes do curso de medicina veterinária, matriculados no Campus do Sertão da Universidade Federal de Sergipe, sobre o tema maus-tratos de animais e violência doméstica. Foram selecionados como público-alvo 42 discentes do início e final do curso, os quais responderam um questionário com perguntas relacionadas ao tema. Os resultados foram tabulados através do programa Microsoft Excel, sendo realizada uma estatística descritiva. Observou-se que 80% (20/25) dos discentes matriculados no início do curso nunca escutaram sobre a Teoria do Elo, entretanto 100% (17/17) dos estudantes que estavam no último estágio da graduação conhecem o tema. A maioria dos discentes entrevistados já presenciaram casos de maus-tratos aos animais. Referente aos casos de violência doméstica às mulheres, crianças ou idosos, 60% (15/25) dos discentes do ciclo 2 nunca presenciaram nenhum caso de violência, porém 52,94% (9/17) estudantes do ciclo cinco já presenciaram este tipo de agressão. A partir dos dados descritos percebe-se que os estudantes do final do curso de medicina veterinária conheciam a importância da Teoria do Elo e como futuros profissionais podem contribuir interrompendo os maus-tratos aos animais e a violência doméstica
