Presented at the European Conference for Cognitive Science in Bochum, Sept. 2019. I synthesize some ideas I take to be promising with regard to a criterion for mental representations in animals. I sketch constitutive conditions for having a depicting perspective on the environment instead of merely reacting successfully to it. Perception, so my argument, is the key to understand the essence of mind in its basic form and beyond.(© Adrian Wieczorek
