Meta‐analysis of the antifungal activities of three essential oils as alternative therapies in dermatophytosis infections

Objetivos: Este trabajo examina las pruebas científicas disponibles sobre la eficacia de aceites esenciales (AE) como terapia alternativa al tratamiento tradicional de las infecciones fúngicas incluyendo la onicomicosis, evaluando el efecto de los tres AE más frecuentemente estudiados por su actividad antifúngica (AE de tomillo, canela y árbol del té) contra tres agentes causantes de enfermedades fúngicas en humanos: Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes y Candida albicans. Métodos y resultados: Se siguió el protocolo de la declaración PRISMA para realizar una búsqueda bibliográfica y se recuperaron 54 artículos que cumplían todos los criterios de inclusión. Se observaron diferencias en los valores de CMI y MFC en función de la cepa del microorganismo y del AE utilizado. microorganismo y el AE utilizado. Las CMI más bajas se observaron con el AE de Cinnamomum zeylanicum (0,013-1120 μl ml-1) contra los tres microorganismos. Para MFC, el valor más bajo se encontró en el AE de Thymus vulgaris (4,2 μl ml-1) contra Trichophyton rubrum. Conclusiones: Los efectos antifúngicos del AE podrían ser una solución muy prometedora para superar las deficiencias terapéuticas de la medicación antimicótica. Se necesitan más experimentos para examinar las propiedades de estos aceites a fin de idear terapias eficaces y no agresivas para el tratamiento de la dermatofitosis. Importancia e impacto del estudio: Los resultados indican que los AE siguen siendo buenos candidatos para futuros tratamientos y podrían aportar una solución para las dedicaciones fallidas y/o las reacciones adversas a los tratamientos farmacológicos actuales.Aims: This work examines the available scientific evidence about the efficiency of essential oils (EO) as an alternative therapy to traditional treatment of fungal infections, including onychomycosis, assessing the effect of the three EO most frequently studied for their antifungal activity (thyme, cinnamon and tea tree EO) against three causative agents of fungal diseases in humans: Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex and Candida albicans. Methods and Results: The PRISMA statement protocol was followed to conduct a bibliographical search and 54 articles that met all the inclusion criteria were retrieved. Differences were observed in the MIC and MFC values depending on the micro-organism strain and the EO used. The lowest MIC were observed with Cinnamomum zeylanicum EO (0.013–1120 μl ml−1) against the three micro-organisms. For MFC, the lowest value was found for Thymus vulgaris EO (4.2 μl ml−1) against Trichophyton rubrum. Conclusions: The antifungal effects of EO could be a very promising solution to overcome the therapeutic shortcomings of antimycotic medication. More experiments are needed to examine the properties of these oils to devise effective and nonaggressive therapies for treatment of dermatophytosis.
