International audienceAs of the end of the fifth century, the Athenian strategoi on the front lines sent letters to the city informing it of ongoing operations. This mode of communication, mentioned by historians such as Thucydides and Xenophon but also in the corpus of the ten Attic Orators, allows us to study how the Athenians situated themselves regarding information. On the one hand, written messages open a new perspective to the debate concerning the importance of the oral or written word: only the articulation of both leads to political decision-making.
