L’âge du Bronze en Lorraine : tentative de modélisation des dynamiques d’occupation dans le temps et dans l’espace

International audienceThirty years of assiduous preventive archaeology practice in Lorraine have built up a stock of data that can be used for numerous archaeological problems with a spatial focus.For the Bronze Age, as for the other chronological periods, the archaeological occupations discovered during diagnostics and excavations are strongly correlated with current developments (motorways, TGV, housing estates, quarries, etc.). These occupations must be discussed in order to estimate their spatial representativeness. Similarly, the landscape characterisation, in which the occupations highlighted are situated, is an important step in defining the types of settlement.As most of the data comes from the national 'Bronze inrap' survey, the comparison of the general dynamics (Bradley et al., 2016) with the Lorraine dynamics, using the sums of probability distribution (SPD) method, makes it possible to highlight some very specific phenomena (decline around 2200 BC, very strong rise around 1250 BC, etc.). The trend observed broadly follows the trend observed in north-western Europe.The characterisation of the data also requires a critical look. The chronological, attribute or spatial data must lead to a standard, as subsequent processing will affect the totality of Bronze Age occupations. The aim is to define types of occupation and their evolution in Lorraine and over time.Thus, in spite of the weaknesses that have been detected, some global treatments have been undertaken and make it possible to form an image of the characteristics of occupations during the Bronze Age. What types of landscape hosted what types of occupation; how far from the main rivers; which plateaus were colonised?Seriations (using a simple presence/absence matrix) make it possible to propose an initial hierarchy of habitats, while the Correspondence Factorial Analysis (CFA) / Hierarchical Clustering on Principal Components (HCPC) pairing attempts to characterise the types of occupation in greater detail (without necessarily being successful).If we were to summarise the observations made, we observe a long stagnation of occupations, mainly confined to the Meuse and Moselle valleys throughout the Early and Middle Bronze Age. A few occupations ventured beyond the valleys during this period. Then, around 1250 BC, there was a very strong increase in the number and density of settlements, which sometimes extended far beyond the main valleys. Throughout the Final Bronze Age, the curve, although irregular, remained at a very high level, well beyond its "vegetative" state at the beginning of the period.One might think, after examining the curve of probability densities, that occupations, after a long phase of sleep, suddenly wake up and show a dynamism never seen before. Perhaps this is a paradigm shift that leads to an impassable ceiling. A ceiling, or rather an asymptote, which then continues during the Hallstatt period.Finally, a few avenues are envisaged to try to explain this unprecedented explosion of habitats, such as the link that these occupations have with the plant economy, and in particular, the generalisation of millet in the cultivated species.These impressions, which are still uncertain and rather fragile if we look closely at the initial data, deserve renewed attention. It is therefore not with a conclusion that we should end this rapid overview, but with perspectives for future work. These prospects should cover very broad fields of study, of which a brief inventory can be made:- The representativeness of the archaeologically explored areas, and how to introduce the Bronze Age occupations into a scheme that takes into account the stripped surfaces, the degrees of erosion, or the nature of the developments (implying certain biases of observation...)- The definition of habitat types. It must be possible to "fill in" the building plans! To be satisfied with the drawing of the post holes seems, at the moment, too reductive. Geophysics on stripped ground has proved its worth. Phosphates make it possible to assume stabling areas, magnetism, forge work etc. In the future, these approaches will have to be systematised as a complement to 'conventional' excavation operations- Dating and the Bayesian approach. Being satisfied with the typo-chronology of the ceramics is too reductive. A systematic radiocarbon dating policy must be considered, itself placed in a Bayesian event model. The dating and phasing of the occupations would gain in quality and give as a result a curve, with a probability surface, and no longer a simple 'flat' interval [lower date - upper date] however precise it may be.Trente années de pratique assidue d’archéologie préventive en Lorraine ont constitué un stock de données que l’on peut utiliser pour de nombreuses problématiques archéologiques à dominante spatiale.Pour l’âge du Bronze, comme pour les autres périodes chronologiques, les occupations archéologiques découvertes au cours des diagnostics et des fouilles sont fortement corrélées aux développements d’aménagements actuels (autoroutes, TGV, lotissements, carrières…). Ces occupations doivent être discutées afin d’estimer leur représentativité spatiale. De même, la caractérisation paysagère, dans laquelle s’inscrivent les occupations mises en évidence, est une étape importante dans la définition des types d’implantations.Les données étant majoritairement issues de l’enquête nationale « Bronze inrap », la comparaison de la dynamique générale (Bradley et al., 2016) avec la dynamique Lorraine, grâce à la méthode des sommes de densité de probabilité (SPD), permet de mettre en évidence quelques phénomènes bien spécifiques (déprise vers -2200, essor très fort vers -1250…). La tendance observée suit, dans les grandes lignes, la tendance observée dans le Nord-Ouest européen.La caractérisation des données passe également par un regard critique. La donnée chronologique, attributaire ou spatiale doit aboutir à un standard, car les traitements postérieurs vont affecter la totalité des occupations de l’âge du Bronze. L’objectif étant de définir des types d’occupations et leurs évolutions en Lorraine et à travers le temps.Ainsi, malgré les fragilités qui ont pu être détectées, quelques traitements globaux sont entrepris et permettent de se faire une image des caractéristiques des occupations durant l’âge du Bronze. Quels types de paysages accueillent quels types d’occupation ? ; à quelle distance des principales rivières ? ; quels sont les plateaux colonisés ?Des sériations (par simple matrice présence / absence) permettent de proposer une première hiérarchisation des habitats, tandis que le couple Analyse Factorielle des Correspondance (AFC) / Classification Ascendante Hiérarchique (CAH) s’efforce de caractériser plus finement des types d’occupation (sans forcément être couronné de succès).S’il fallait synthétiser les observations réalisées, on observe une longue stagnation des occupations, majoritairement cantonnées aux vallées de la Meuse et de la Moselle durant tout le Bronze Ancien et Bronze Moyen. Quelques occupations s’aventurent au-delà des vallées à cette période. Puis autour de -1250 BC, une progression très forte des habitats, en nombre et en densité, qui vont déborder parfois largement au-delà des principales vallées. Durant tout le Bronze final, la courbe, bien qu’irrégulière, reste à un niveau très haut, bien au-delà de son état « végétatif » du début de période.On pourrait penser, suite à l’examen de la courbe des densités de probabilité, que les occupations, après une longue phase de sommeil, se réveillent brusquement et montrent un dynamisme encore jamais observé. Peut-être s’agit-t-il d’un changement de paradigme qui aboutit à un plafond infranchissable. Un plafond, ou plutôt une asymptote, qui se poursuit ensuite durant le Hallstatt.Quelques pistes sont envisagées enfin pour tenter d’expliquer cette explosion inédite des habitats, comme le lien que ces occupations entretiennent avec l’économie végétale, et en particulier, la généralisation du millet dans les espèces cultivées.Ces impressions, encore mal assurées et assez fragiles si on regarde attentivement la donnée de départ, méritent une attention renouvelée. Ce n’est donc pas par une conclusion qu’il faut achever ce rapide tour d’horizon, mais par des perspectives de travail sur l’avenir. Ces perspectives devront couvrir des champs d’études très large dont on peut faire un rapide inventaire :- La représentativité des zones explorées archéologiquement, et comment introduire les occupations de l’âge du Bronze dans un schéma qui tient compte des surfaces décapées, des degrés d’érosions, ou des natures des aménagements (impliquant certains biais d’observation…)- La définition des types d’habitat. On doit pouvoir « remplir » les plans de bâtiments ! Se contenter du dessin des trous de poteau semble, à l’heure actuelle, trop réducteur. La géophysique sur terrain décapé a fait ses preuves. Les phosphates permettent de supposer les espaces de stabulation, le magnétisme, le travail de la forge etc. Il faudra, à l’avenir, systématiser ces approches en complément des opérations de fouilles « conventionnelles »- La datation et l’approche bayésienne. Se contenter de la typo-chronologie de la céramique est trop réducteur. Il faut envisager une politique de datation radiocarbone systématique, replacée elle-même dans un modèle d’évènement bayésien. Les datations et le phasage des occupations gagneraient en qualité et donnent comme résultat une courbe, avec une surface de probabilité, et non plus un simple intervalle « plat » [date inf – date sup] si précis puisse-t-il être.Biblio :BRADLEY R., HASELGROVE C., VANDER LINDEN M., WEBLEY L.
