Architectural ceramics in Samarra : sources and issues of a production and its influence

La céramique architecturale de Samarra (Iraq) est issue des décors palatiaux du calife au sein de sa capitale abbasside (836-892). Cette thèse a déterminé les origines de la technique de décor de ces céramiques, de rassembler un corpus de pièces, de préciser leur découverte, de comprendre leur usage et leur agencement à l’origine dans le palais, d’étudier les origines et la diffusion de leurs techniques décoratives. Il s’agit en effet des premières céramiques architecturales glaçurées islamiques. Les fragments découverts à Samarra ont été dispersés après la première guerre mondiale et sont réunis pour la première fois. Cet ensemble présente des caractéristiques techniques variées : décors lustrés,glaçures colorées, motifs figurés. La technologie complexe du lustre métallique utilisée dans la céramique de Samarra est une invention des Arts de l’Islam. L’histoire de l’implantation et du développement de cette production a mis en lumière son organisation, ses techniques, son usage dans la capitale abbasside, et sa diffusion en dehors de Samarra du IXe au XIe siècle. L’étude de cette production doit permettre de reconstituer l’ensemble décoratif. Samarra est primordial pour notre connaissance de la vie, de l’organisation et de l’histoire des Abbassides, et plus largement pour l’histoire de l’art médiéval. Un second niveau historique est celui de l’histoire contemporaine de ces carreaux, qui va de leur découverte au début du XXe siècle à la première guerre mondiale et aux changements géopolitiques qui augmentent alors les collections occidentales.A partir de l’étude des carreaux de Samarra, c'est l'histoire des débuts de la céramique architecturale en Islam qui est dessinée.The architectural ceramics of Samarra, Iraq, are originating from the palatial decorations of the Abbasid Caliph in his capital (836-892).This thesis has determined the origins of the decorative technique of these ceramics, to gather a corpus of pieces, to specify their discovery, to understand their use and their original arrangement in the palace,and to study the origins and the diffusion of their decorative techniques. These are indeed the firstIslamic glazed architectural ceramics.The fragments discovered at Samarra were dispersed after the First World War and are brought togetherfor the first time. This collection features a variety of technical characteristics: lustrous decorations,colored glazes, figural motifs. The complex technology of metallic lustre used in the Samarra ceramics is an invention of Islamic arts. The history of the establishment and development of this production hasshed light on its organization, its techniques, its use in the Abbasid capital, and its diffusion outside Samarra from the 9th to the 11th century. The study of this production should allow the reconstructionof the decorative ensemble. Samarra is paramount for our knowledge of the life, organization and history of the Abbasids, and more widely for the history of medieval art. A second level of history is the contemporary history of these tiles, from their discovery at the beginning of the twentieth century to theFirst World War and the geopolitical changes that increased Western collections at that time.
