La génération de gamètes haploïdes à partir d’une cellule diploïde au cours de la méiose, nécessite la ségrégation correcte des chromosomes homologues. Ce point critique est assuré par la génération de crossovers qui résultent de la réparation par recombinaison homologue de cassures double-brin de l’ADN (CDB) introduites sur le génome. Ces CDBs sont formées dans des régions appauvries en nucléosomes, correspondant aux promoteurs de gènes chez Saccharomyces cerevisiae, et nommées « hotspots » de cassures.
