Characterization of selected samples od coloured gemstones

Gemološki materijal su minerali (ili materijali organskog podrijetla) koji su odabrani zbog svoje ljepote i izdržljivosti, a kasnije rezani i polirani kako bi poslužili za uljepšavanje ili ukrašavanje. U ovom radu obrađuje se devet gemoloških materijala koji su određeni kao korund. Ovi uzorci se međusobno primarno razlikuju bojom, rezom, sjajem, te drugim karakteristikama. Odabrani gemološki materijal je analiziran sa šest metoda kojima su određena njihova fizička i optička svojstva. Fizička svojstva materijala određena su vizualnim promatranjem, te promatranjem pod lupom i UV lampom. Instrumenti korišteni za metode određivanja optičkih svojstva su polariskop i refraktometar. Posljednja metoda korištena na ovim uzorcima je FT-IR spektroskopija (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) kojom se može odrediti o kojoj vrsti gemološkog materijala je riječ. Nakon provođenja svih metoda na svakom uzorku, na temelju njihovih fizičkih i optičkih svojstva utvrđeno je da nisu svi uzorci korund, te se zapravo radi o pet uzoraka korunda, jednom granatu, jednom topazu i dva kvarca.Gems are minerals (or organic materials) that have been chosen for their beauty and durability, then cut and polished for use as human adorment or decoration. This paper observes nine gemstones that are classified as corundum. These gemstones are primary different by colour, cut, luster and other characteristcs. Chosen gemstones are analyzed by six methods that define their physical and optical properties. Physical properties are determined by visual examination, examination by a magnifying glass and under the UV lamp. Instruments used to determine their optical properties are polariscope and refractometer. Last method used on this samples is FT – IR spectroscopy (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) which can determine which gemological material it is. After analyzing all samples with all methods, based on their physical and optical properties it is established that not all samples are corundum, in fact there are five samples of corundum, one garnet, one topaz and two samples of quartz
