Depression Detection Using Deep Learning Features From MRI Brain Imaging

Klasifikacija podataka dubokim nadziranim učenjem jedan je od pristupa strojnog učenja čiji je cilj da podatke svrstava u željene kategorije. U ovom radu nadzirano učenje primijenjeno je na skupu fMRI slika mozga ljudi sa i bez depresije te je cilj bio izgraditi konvolucijsku neuronsku mrežu koja će što točnije klasificirati te slike u pripadnu klasu. U radu se klasifikacija radila pomoću vlastite konstruirane konvolucijske neuronske mreže i pomoću GoogLeNet arhitekture. Radi usporedbe rezultata, napravljena su 3 osnovna pristupa zasnovana na pogađanju: nasumični klasifikator koji je slučajnim odabirom svrstavao slike u pojedinu od dvije klase, nasumični Stratified klasifikator te klasifikator koji je sve slike svrstavao u brojčano dominantniju skupinu. Točnosti osnovnih pristupa zasnovanih na pogađanju kreću se od 47% do 54%, a F1-mjere u rasponu od 49% do 70%. Točnosti klasifikatora za GoogLeNet kreću se u vrijednostima od 54% do 57.5%, a vrijednosti F1 mjere od 65% do 70% u najboljim slučajevima, u kojima je korišteno samo 5 slojeva originalne arhitekture. Za vlastitu konvolucijsku mrežu najbolja se pokazala arhitektura kada se koriste 3 konvolucijska i 2 linearna sloja, kod koje se točnosti kreću od 55% do 59%, a vrijednosti F1 mjere od 60% do 70%. Pomoću obje testirane arhitekture mogu se postići bolji rezultati klasifikacije u odnosu na osnovne pristupe zasnovane na pogađanju. Zbog svoje jednostavnosti, a jednakih i u nekim slučajevima boljih rezultata, preporuča se korištenje vlastite arhitekture u odnosu na korištenje neuronske mreže GoogLeNet kao klasifikatora za ovaj problem.Classification of data by deep supervised learning is one of the approaches of machine learning whose goal is to classify data into the desired categories. In this paper, supervised learning was applied to a set of fMRI brain images of people with and without depression, and the goal was to build a convolutional neural network that would classify these images as accurately as possible. In this paper, the classification was done using our own constructed convolutional neural network and using the GoogLeNet architecture. To compare the results, 3 baselines were created: a random classifier that randomly classified images into one of the two classes, a random Stratified classifier, and a classifier that classified all images into a numerically more dominant group. Baseline accuracy ranges from 47% to 54 %, and F1 measures range from 49% to 70%. The accuracy of the classifier for GoogLeNet ranges from 54% to 57.5%, and the F1-score ranges from 65% to 70% in the best cases, in which only 5 layers of the original architecture were used. For own convolutional network designs proposed in this paper, the architecture proved to be the best when 3 convolutional and 2 linear layers are used, in which the accuracy ranges from 55% to 59%, and the F1-score values range from 60% to 70%. With both tested architectures, better classification results can be achieved compared to baselines. Due to its simplicity, and equal and in some cases better results, it is recommended to use the self-made architecture proposed in this paper compared to using GoogLeNet as a classifier for this problem
