The aim of this thesis is to derive the equations of motion for surface waves in the ocean. We start from the description of a general wave, after which we demonstrate the principle of linear superposition of waves. We show what the mathematical expressions that describe deep and shallow sea waves look like. We will derive the wave equations, starting from the Bernoulli’s and Laplace’s equations and a set of boundary conditions. Considering that the expressions are more complex, various approximations are used with the aim of solving the problem more easily.
