This dissertation aims to show how female performances came to reflect, embody and propel the new politics and aesthetics of the Broadway musical, from the second half of the 1960s until today, between a deconstruction of the genre’s many enchantments and the emergence of new, more inclusive utopias. The analysis focuses on thirteen musicals that stage female incarnations of marginality, through which the genre’s ambiguities and capacity to blur the distinction between margins and center surface.
