The radical-mediated thiol-ene addition reaction has been known for more than a century and the most important application is in polymerization. However, thiol-ene step polymerization has rarely been used in dispersed systems to prepare polymer particles in water. In our search for a way to produce chemically stable thiol-ene monomer emulsions and miniemulsions, the mechanism accounting for the self-initiation of thiol-ene polymerization is studied and the role of initiating thiyl radicals generated by air oxidation of thiols is highlighted.
