Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease that mainly affects the axial skeleton. The disease manifests itself at a young age (<40 years) and can be divided in a subtype with radiographic changes of the sacroiliac joints according to the Modified New York criteria, called ankylosing spondylitis (AS, or radiographic axSpA) and a subtype without radiographic changes, non-radiographic axSpA (nr-axSpA). For both, the radiographic and nr-axSpA, the main clinical symptom is chronic low back pain with an inflammatory character.
